It is a major paternal centre which serves the population of Bulawayo Metropolitan Province, Matabeleland North and South, Midlands and Masvingo Provinces. It is also a teaching hospital for the National University of Science and Technology (NUST), and has strong links with the University of Zimbabwe (UZ) and several other academic institutions. Mpilo Central Hospital was opened in August 1958 by the then Central African Federation as a hospital for the indigenous African people.It is the largest hospital in the southern region of Zimbabwe. It is a quaternary referral institution for patients from Bulawayo Metropolitan, Matabeleland North, Matabeleland South, Midlands and Masvingo provinces of Zimbabwe. The hospital’s name, ‘Mpilo’ means ‘life’ in the indigenous Ndebele language. The hospital has developed over the years to a 1000 bedded health institution offering various specialist services. It is a teaching hospital for the National University of Science and Technology Medical School, is an affiliate of the University Zimbabwe Medical School, also offers Diploma in General Nursing and Diploma in Midwifery.
